FUNDRAISING CO-CHAIRS
Fundraisers are kind of like cheerleaders: transferring enthusiasm about our school to others in a way that inspires meaningful support. Their main responsibilities are to strategize and carry out (with the help of fellow volunteers) fundraising activities that reach different types of community stakeholders. For example, we raise money from the parents enrolled in our school through the Fall Pledge Drive, which is our largest source of funds. We have raised money from students’ circles of extended families and friends through a pledge-a-thon event called “Marchathon,” we have auctioned goods and services donated by local businesses to anyone involved with our school, and we organized a really fun parents’ night out. Some of these activities have involved dressing up in costumes that have amused and/or alarmed our Micheltorena family. If you would like to get involved, or have other ways we can raise needed funds for our school, please email us: [email protected].
Daphne Muller and Maya Rabinovitch: Co-Chairs of Fundraising
Daphne and her partner Eric have lived in Silverlake since their soon-to-be 2nd grader Amon was born. Their youngest, Bennett, will join Micheltorena next fall as a Kindergartener. She is a UX content strategist who enjoys staying busy on the weekend with the boys and traveling back east to visit family in NYC and South Carolina.
Maya’s son Judah, is excitedly moving on to 2nd grade (or grade 3, as it’s called in Canada)! She and her husband moved here from Toronto almost seven years ago and are thrilled to have found Micheltorena. Back in Toronto, Maya worked as a fundraiser for nonprofits and a theatre director/dramaturg/producer. She currently works on the fundraising team at LA's BEST Afterschool Enrichment Program, but is starting to delve back into theater. She is excited to be working with FOM!
COMMUNICATIONS CO-CHAIRS
The Communications Co-Chairs are responsible for coordinating communications from FOM to parents, teachers and administrators; for outreach to local community, and for FOM’s online presence including any contributions to FOM’s website and any social media operated by FOM (such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.) In order to keep our community informed about important news and upcoming events, they will employ all of the above-mentioned methods of communication, in addition to newsletters (e-blasts), WhatsApp, sandwich boards placed near school entrances, and flyers, signs and banners distributed around the school. Whenever possible, they will try to ensure that messages are sent in both Spanish and English. To reach them, please send an email to [email protected].
Divya Akhouri and Lexsea Mann: Co-Chairs of Communications
Divya—mother to Krishna, a 2nd grader in the DLP—is a visual artist who was born in India, raised in Boston, and split time between New York City and Los Angeles before settling in Silver Lake six years ago. She was introduced to FOM last year by volunteering for International Heritage Day, Pumpkinfest and Marchathon, and is a big proponent of community building and diversity through cultural events.
Lexsea has lived in Silver Lake for the past 13 years and has long awaited getting to be a part of the Micheltorena community. She is the mother of 2nd-grade DLP student Winslow. You can often find her at the rec center watching her three young kids play and now that her youngest is almost a year old, she is excited to join FOM.
BEAUTIFICATION AND SUSTAINABILITY CO-CHAIRS
The Beautification team responsibilities include cultivating, supporting, and managing all of the green spaces on campus, including our California Native Outdoor Classroom and Butterfly Habitat, shade trees, raised garden beds and climbing vines, and grassy lawn. Twice a year, they help coordinate Beautification Days to clean the campus, pick up trash and recycling, weed and trim the green spaces, and coordinate the creation and/or touch ups of school murals, peace path, and other artwork around campus. To reach them, please send an email to [email protected].
Hannah Segal Hochman and Tracy Aguilar: Co-Chairs of Beautification
Hannah’s daughter Beatrice is a 1st grader and she has two younger girls who are future Micheltorena Eagles. She is a physician at a local community clinic. Her favorite place to be is in her garden with her kids, two dogs, 11 chickens and many many plants. She is enthusiastic about sharing her love of plants and gardens with the Micheltorena community as part of the beautification team.
Tracy is a social worker, therapist, and mom to Max, a 1st grader in the DLP. Tracy and her husband Neil (along with Max!) live nearby and you can see her walking to school all the time, rain or shine. Tracy is new to Micheltorena this year, but is very interested in making it the best place it can be for all our kids and families. When she can find the time, Tracy loves being active outdoors.
IDEA CO-CHAIRS
We are so excited for IDEA, our new Inclusion, Diversity and Equity Alliance. IDEA has been created to support, celebrate and partner with historically underrepresented members of our Micheltorena community. Please reach out to IDEA co-chairs, Jorge, Elizabeth, and Amada, with any questions, concerns, information or resources you’d like to share at [email protected].

Jorge is parent to 2nd grader Celina, and incoming kindergartener Paloma. He was born and raised in New York City and has lived in the L.A. area for seven years. He is married to Ilene, our Intern Coordinator. He and Ilene share a passion for community service and look forward to lending their time and effort to Micheltorena. Jorge is excited to work with Elizabeth on growing IDEA in the coming year!
INTERN COORDINATOR
The Intern Coordinator serves as a liaison between the international interns and the host families who care for them during their stay. From interviewing prospective candidates to recruiting and managing the relationships with current hosts, the Intern Coordinator is a people person. The job involves attending to the nuances of what makes strong intern candidates for our school and which families will have a mutually beneficial experience with the interns they are matched with. Apart from matchmaking, the Coordinator helps connect interns with community opportunities for homemade dinners, excursions to favorite LA landmarks, sporting events and other social events. We are always looking to grow our team of language-loving friends! For more information, please email: [email protected].
Ilene Squires: Intern Coordinator
Mom to Celina (2nd grade) and Paloma (TK), Ilene was born and raised in Los Angeles before spending time abroad in Spain and later, New York City, where she worked as a bilingual educator. After a decade working in education reform, she transitioned to a career as a photographer of children, non-profits, and schools. Since becoming a parent and returning home to LA, she has spent time as LAUSD Teaching Artist, with a Media Arts focus. Ilene is inspired by travel and has been to 38 countries and counting! Her experience as an exchange student in Spain taught her the value of bilingualism, and the Amity program is one of the reasons she and her family chose Micheltorena. When not coaching soccer, you can find her hiking in the nearby mountains or working in her garden.
